Google Earth Tour

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015

For our first project in INDT 501 we developed a Google Earth Tour relating to a Virginia SOL standard.  I chose a standard from World History to 1500 A.D., which is a course within my certified content area.  The standard was:

WHI. 6a The student will demonstrate knowledge of ancient Rome from about 700 B.C. (B.C.E.) to 500 A.D. (C.E.) in terms of its impact on Western

civilization by

  1. a) assessing the influence of geography on Roman economic, social, and political development.

Using Google Earth I showed how Rome’s location and Geography influenced it’s dominance in the region.  I highlighted the impact of its central location both in the Mediterranean, as well as on the Italian Peninsula.  I also discussed the importance of the Tiber River as well as the protection from the Alps to the north.  Google Earth’s value really aided the alps section because it gave you a sense of how difficult it would be to navigate through them.  While there was a slight malfunction of the software at the end cutting off my summarizing statement, I could see using this tour in the classroom.
