Meeting with a historian:

I met with Jack Bales in the library on August 27, 2009 to ask a few questions.  Would this be an interesting paper to commit to?  Is there enough sources to find? And finally, if he could get me started on research.  Bales, being a baseball fan, of course thought it would be interesting research.  He said that there was plenty of easily found resources to be found, not only in Mary Washington’s library, but others around.  To begin research, he directed me to the reference section where they have a few Baseball Encyclopedias and Histories.  Then to the 2nd floor of the library where the sports section is.  I ended up checking out 9 books (listed below) on the subject to get me started which appear to be very good secondary sources that I will probably use in my eventual paper.

Adelson, Bruce.  (1999).  Brushing Back Jim Crow:  The Integration of Minor League Baseball In the American South.

Chadwick, Bruce.  (1992).  When the Game Was Black and White:  An Illustrated History of Baseball’s Negro Leagues.

Freedman, Louis.  (2007).  African American Pioneers of Baseball:  A Biographical Encyclopedia.

Heaphy, Leslie.  (2002).  The Negro Leagues, 1869-1960.

Loverro, Thom.  (2003).  The Encyclopedia of Negro League Baseball.

Peterson, Robert.  (1970).  Only the Ball Was White.

Shropshire, Kenneth.  (1996).  In Black and White: Race and Sports In America.

Simon, Scott.  (2002).  Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball.

White, Sol.  (1995).  Sol White’s History of Colored Baseball with Other Documents on the Early Black Game, 1886-1936.

Burns, Ken (Director & Producer). (1994). Baseball [Motion Picture]. PBS Paramount.

One of the primary sources I will be using is the various interviews of old baseball players used in the 1994 Baseball PBS series by Ken Burns. Baseball is an 1140 minute documentary about the 150 year history of baseball. A large portion of the documentary involves the history of the Negro Leagues along with many interviews of ex-players which are relevant to my topic. I am going to be considering these interviews as a primary source from people who have experienced the topic and can tell stories about some of the situations that they faced. Ken Burns collected these interviews and comprised this documentary as he has done with other popular topics such as Jazz, the Civil War, and the Great War. One of the problems with this as a primary source is that since it is dealing with an oral history, it may be harder to remember and to quote since it is not written down in plain text.

Major League Baseball Negro Leagues Hall of Fame Inductees

To begin research on any topic, you have to consider what you already know about it first. This is a list of Negro League players in MLB’s Hall of Fame. Part of the reason for doing this research is because I only know 7 of the 35 inductees listed. Of those 7, most of them I only know by name, and only know 2 or 3 by a few specific stories or stats.
